During Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30), many retailers run sitewide discounts, and some also accept coupon codes. Used properly, a coupon can lower your final price. Used carelessly, it wastes time or leads you to fake offers. This guide shows how to find, test and stack codes — and what to do when they do not work.
Types of Coupon Codes You Will See
- Percentage off: for example, a percent off your order or a selected category.
- Dollar off: a fixed amount off when you spend a minimum.
- Free shipping codes: removes delivery fees, often above a minimum.
- Gift-with-purchase offers: a free item when you spend a set amount.
- New-customer or email-signup codes: usually one use per customer.
- Automatic discounts: a sale that applies without a code.
Read our basics on how coupon stacking really works for a deeper explanation.
Where to Find Legitimate Coupon Codes
- The retailer's own site. Look at banners, the footer and the promotions page.
- Retailer emails and apps. Many send exclusive offers to subscribers. See why retailers send email-only discounts if you want the reasoning.
- Coupon sites like TrackDownDeals. Browse the store's page in our stores directory, for example Kohl's, Macy's, Nike, Dell or Sephora.
- Our Black Friday page. Current offers and codes appear on the Black Friday & Cyber Monday deals page.
Always confirm that a code works at checkout before you count on the savings.
How to Test a Coupon Code Step by Step
- Add the product to your cart and go to the checkout or cart page.
- Find the field labeled "Promo Code", "Coupon Code" or "Gift Card or Promo Code."
- Paste the code exactly as written — avoid extra spaces.
- Apply it and look at the order summary.
- Compare the new total with the original price. If the total does not drop, the code is not working for your cart.
How to Stack Discounts
Stacking means combining more than one discount on a single order. Some retailers allow one code at a time but allow it on top of a sale price; others block codes on sale items. Ways to combine savings include:
- Sale price + coupon code (when allowed).
- Coupon code + free shipping.
- Loyalty points or rewards + a sale. Many stores run reward programs; see our guides to Bloomingdale's Loyallist, Urban Outfitters Rewards and Belk Rewards.
- Credit card or cashback offers on top of the retailer's price.
If a store does not allow stacking, calculate which single offer gives the lowest total.
Why Coupon Codes Fail at Checkout
- The code has expired or reached its usage limit.
- Your cart does not meet the minimum.
- The product is excluded, such as clearance, gift cards or certain brands.
- The code is for new customers only.
- A different promotion is already applied and cannot be combined.
- Typing errors, such as extra spaces or the wrong letter case.
We explain these problems in more detail in why some coupon codes fail at checkout and why coupon codes suddenly stop working, and our posts on coupon stacking and fake discounts cover related traps.
Spotting Fake or Misleading Coupon Offers
- Be skeptical of codes promising extreme discounts, such as 90% off an entire site.
- Do not enter payment details on unfamiliar websites. Read how to spot a fake retailer website in 10 seconds.
- Do not download software or browser extensions from unknown sources in exchange for a coupon.
- Check that the final price at checkout, not the banner, reflects the discount.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a coupon code on Black Friday sale items?
Sometimes. Many retailers exclude sale or clearance items from additional codes, but others allow them. Check the code's terms and test it in your cart.
Why does my coupon say "invalid"?
The code may be expired, restricted to certain products, or not eligible with other promotions in your cart.
Are coupon codes better than sitewide sales?
Not always. Compare the final price of each option. If the sitewide sale is deeper than the code, use that instead.
Should I wait for a coupon before buying?
If the sale price is already good and the item might sell out, buying may be better than waiting for a code that may not appear.
