The Real Fall Sales Calendar: What's Worth Waiting For Before Black Friday
"Just wait for Black Friday" is decent advice for exactly one category of purchase: big-ticket electronics. For almost everything else, waiting means missing the actual best price of the season, which happens earlier — or later — than most people assume. Here's what genuinely moves, month by month.
September: Two Clearances Happening at Once
September is a split month. Summer inventory — patio furniture, grills, outdoor gear, warm-weather apparel — hits its deepest markdowns of the entire year here, as stores clear floor space for fall stock. At the same time, back-to-school leftovers (backpacks, dorm basics, school supplies) get a second, quieter round of discounts after the official back-to-school push ends. Neither of these will be cheaper later; both are worth buying now if you need them.
October: The Early Fall Events
Most major retailers now run a dedicated October sales event — positioned explicitly as a preview of Black Friday pricing, not the real thing, but genuinely discounted on a specific, limited set of items. Treat these as a chance to lock in a good (not best-of-year) price on something you need soon, not as a reason to hold off on everything else until November.
Early November: The Quiet Window
The two or three weeks before Thanksgiving are underrated. Some categories — mattresses, major appliances, furniture — actually see real discounts here, separate from Black Friday, as retailers compete for early holiday shopping before the crowd arrives. If you've been pricing a mattress or a couch, this window is often as good as what shows up four weeks later, with far less competition for stock and customer service attention.
What's Actually Worth Waiting For
- TVs, laptops, and major electronics — this is the one category where Black Friday and Cyber Monday reliably beat everything that came before.
- Smart home devices — consistently see their steepest markdowns of the year in that same late-November window.
- Toys — retailers hold their biggest toy discounts for the peak holiday shopping weeks, not earlier.
What's Not Worth Waiting For
- Patio and outdoor gear — already at its yearly low in September; it won't get cheaper by November, it'll just be gone.
- Fall boots and outerwear at full retail launch — new-season fashion rarely discounts meaningfully until its own end-of-season clearance, which lands in winter, not Black Friday.
- Anything you need this week — a "better" price two months out is not a discount if you go without in the meantime; buy it when you need it and look for a current code instead of delaying the purchase itself.
The Simple Version
Buy summer and back-to-school leftovers in September. Use October's events for anything time-sensitive. Watch mattresses, furniture, and appliances in early November. Save the actual waiting for electronics, smart home gear, and toys — that's the one category where the calendar really does reward patience.
