JBL Tune Buds 2: A Known Brand's Budget Earbuds, Genuinely Discounted
Unlike a lot of unbranded earbud listings that flood marketplace sites, the JBL Tune Buds 2 come from an audio brand with decades of actual product history and independent reviews to check against. At $69.99, marked down from $109.99, Kohl's is offering a real 36% discount on a known quantity rather than an anonymous product riding an inflated comparison price.
What "2" Actually Signals
JBL's Tune series has been a consistent presence in the budget-to-midrange earbud category for several product generations now, and a numbered sequel typically means real hardware and firmware improvements — refined noise cancelling, better battery efficiency, or updated Bluetooth codec support — rather than a cosmetic refresh with a new number slapped on. It's worth checking JBL's own comparison between the Tune Buds and Tune Buds 2 if you want the specific list of what changed, but the naming convention itself is a reasonable signal this isn't JBL's first attempt at this exact product.
Noise Cancelling at This Price
Active noise cancelling has historically been a premium-tier feature, and its presence on a sub-$70 pair of earbuds is genuinely notable — a lot of competitors at this price point either skip ANC entirely or include a much weaker passive-only version. It's reasonable to expect budget-tier ANC performance rather than flagship-level noise cancellation, but having real, functional ANC at all in this price bracket is a meaningful value proposition worth factoring into the comparison against similarly priced unbranded alternatives.
Why the Discount Is Believable
A 36% markdown is a real, credible discount range for consumer electronics from an established brand — not the suspiciously large percentage that tends to signal an inflated reference price. $109.99 is a normal, defensible price for a JBL earbud with ANC, and $69.99 reads as a genuine promotional price rather than a number picked to make the percentage look impressive.
What to Check Before Buying
Confirm the charging case's battery life claim and the earbuds' individual playtime separately — manufacturers often advertise a combined total that sounds impressive but obscures how long you actually get before needing to drop the buds back in the case. It's also worth checking whether these support multipoint Bluetooth connection (pairing to two devices simultaneously) if you regularly switch between a phone and a laptop, since that feature varies even within JBL's own lineup.
Who Should Buy These
These fit anyone who wants a trusted, established audio brand rather than an anonymous marketplace listing, at a genuinely discounted price, with real ANC as a bonus rather than the main selling point. If you're an audiophile chasing the best possible sound signature regardless of price, JBL's higher tiers or a dedicated audio brand will serve you better — but for everyday use, commuting, and workouts, this is a sensible, well-priced pick.
It's also worth checking whether these come with multiple ear tip sizes in the box — a surprisingly common oversight on budget earbuds is including only one or two tip sizes, which can undermine both comfort and the effectiveness of any passive noise isolation regardless of how good the active noise cancelling itself is. JBL has generally been reliable about including a reasonable range of tip sizes across the Tune series, but it's a five-second check worth doing against the box contents list before assuming fit won't be an issue.
And if you're a Kohl's Rewards member, it's worth stacking this price against any current Kohl's Cash promotion running at checkout — the combination of an already-discounted price plus Kohl's Cash earned on the purchase can meaningfully lower the effective cost further on a future order.
The Bottom Line
At $69.99, this is a real discount from a real audio brand, with genuine ANC at a price point where that's still somewhat rare. A safe, sensible buy for anyone shopping this category on a budget.
